#SCMBookClub – August

There are an estimated 45,000 self-help books in print. In 2011 the UK self-help book in industry was estimated to be worth £6 million. As a nation we have gone out and bought these books that promise to revolutionise our lives and solve all our problems. But which ones are actually any good?

The danger of a self-help book is to enthusiastically open to cover convinced your life will be unrecognisable by the time you read the final page and slide it onto your book shelf. A book can not fix you, your career, your marriage or your finance. But YOU can.

In #SCMBookClub I want us to all share what we have learnt, what we have found useful, what we hated and what we did to put this into practice. Use the hashtag to keep yourself accountable and to share your successes with other. Don’t be afraid to speak out if you haven’t done so well, this is part of growing and I will be there for you every step of the way.

You may be thinking “I don’t have time for a book club” or “I can’t afford to buy a book every month”. Do not worry. No one is going to know if you don’t read the whole book or if you skip a month and I aim to choose books that are available cheaply or are likely to be found in book shops or libraries. If you do have a problem getting hold of the book do let me know.

How Does It Work?

On the 1st of every month a blog post will go live with the book for that month.

The book can be any kind of self-help book or even an inspiring memoir, biography or fiction book.

All book club members will read the book over the month.

Anyone can join in at any time.

Tweet pictures of yourself and the book or you putting something you have found in the book into action with the hashtag #SCMBookClub.

Once the month is over I will write up my own review of the book including my favourite pictures and comments from the rest of the book club.

This Months Book

For the first month of #SCMBookClub I have chosen a book that was recommended to me by a fellow freelancer. I have gone for something that will appeal to everyone as everyone feels fear. Be it fear of intimacy, public speaking, quitting your job, of rejection or joining a book club, this book has got you covered.

#SCMBookClub Book For August is Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers.

Enjoy everybody! Remember to comment your recommendations for next month and tweet #SCMBookClub to let me know you’re in.

  1. This is a good idea Emma. I’m sure lots of people will find it really helpful. I’ll be interested to hear what you think of that book. I don’t usually read self help books but ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’ seems like a good motto and that’s pretty much what I have always done so I’m interested to see if the book lives up to its title!
